Eric Staal Retires After an Illustrious 18-Season NHL Career
Eric Staal, the former NHL all-star and a pivotal figure in the Carolina Hurricanes' history, has officially hung up his skates after an 18-season career. The Hurricanes confirmed his retirement through a ceremonial one-day contract, allowing him to retire as a member of the team that drafted him second overall in the 2003 NHL Draft.
A Storied Career with the Hurricanes
Staal's impact on the Carolina Hurricanes is immeasurable. From his rookie season, he demonstrated skill and leadership, which became even more evident during the 2005-06 campaign. That season, Staal was instrumental in leading the Hurricanes to their first Stanley Cup victory, recording 45 goals and 55 assists. His 100-point season remains the only one in Carolina's history.
Staal's crowning moment came during the decisive Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers. His assist on Justin Williams’ empty-net goal late in the game was the final touch that secured the championship for the Hurricanes.
Reflecting on his time with the Hurricanes, Staal said, "From the time I arrived in Raleigh at 18 years old and throughout my 12 years there, I felt the love and support of the fans and organization in a way that will always feel special to me. There was no doubt in my mind that when it became time to hang up my skates, I would want to retire as a Carolina Hurricane. To now also know that the team is retiring my No. 12 is truly humbling and I am extremely grateful and honored."
Franchise Records and Honors
During his years with the Hurricanes, Staal etched his name into the team’s record books. He leaves as the franchise leader in goals (322), assists (453), points (775), games played (909), power-play goals (105), power-play points (252), and hat tricks (13). Further immortalizing his legacy, the Hurricanes will retire his number 12 jersey.
Eric Tulsky, the general manager of the Hurricanes, sang Staal’s praises: "Eric is a uniquely central figure in franchise history. Throughout his time in the Triangle, he made an immeasurable impact on his teammates, the organization, and the community. We look forward to raising No. 12 to the rafters and celebrating the career of a man who has meant so much to hockey fans in North Carolina."
A Veteran's Journey Across the NHL
While Staal’s heart remained with the Hurricanes, his career journey saw him don the jerseys of several other NHL teams. After leaving Carolina, he played for the New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, and Florida Panthers. His final NHL season was the 2022-23 campaign with the Panthers.
Throughout his career, Staal consistently demonstrated his elite skills and versatility. His career totals of 455 goals and 608 assists over 1,365 games are a testament to his longevity and consistent performance. Additionally, he was selected for six NHL All-Star Games and claimed MVP honors in the 2008 All-Star Game.
Legacy and Family Ties
Eric Staal's chapter in the NHL may be closing, but his legacy will endure, particularly through his family ties. His younger brother, Jordan Staal, currently serves as the captain of the Hurricanes, ensuring that the Staal legacy remains alive in Raleigh.
As the Hurricanes prepare to retire his number and celebrate his illustrious career, Staal's enduring impact on the franchise and the sport of hockey is undeniable. Fans in Raleigh and beyond will remember Eric Staal not just for his records and accolades, but for the passion and dedication he brought to the ice every game.
