Columbus Blue Jackets Season Recap 2022

A Season of Struggles

The Columbus Blue Jackets faced relentless adversity during Vincent’s tenure as head coach. The season wrapped up with a disheartening 27-43-12 record, leading to the fewest points in the Eastern Conference and the fourth-fewest in the entire NHL. It marked the fourth consecutive season the Blue Jackets missed the playoffs.

The team endured a particularly painful stretch in November, suffering nine straight losses and securing victories in only three of their 15 games that month. This pattern of inconsistency was evident throughout the season, with eight separate three-game losing streaks, culminating in a demoralizing four-game spiral from April 7 through April 13.

Defensively, the Blue Jackets struggled mightily, allowing the second-most goals per game in the league. Their special teams play was equally fraught with difficulties, ending with the second-worst power play and a penalty kill ranked in the bottom ten. Offensively, the issues were just as glaring, with the team scoring the 24th fewest goals per game.

Leadership Changes

February marked a significant shift in the Blue Jackets' front office as General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen was relieved of his duties. Kekalainen had been with the organization since the 2012-13 season, and his departure signaled a desire for a fresh start.

In May, the Blue Jackets made a pivotal move by hiring Don Waddell, the former General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, to take on the dual roles of GM and President of Hockey Operations. Waddell was seen as a seasoned veteran with the expertise to steer the team in a new, positive direction.

One of Waddell's immediate priorities was addressing the head coaching position, a task that would prove crucial for the team’s future success.

Vincent's Short Tenure

Pascal Vincent’s journey with the Blue Jackets began auspiciously in the 2021-22 season, when he was brought on as an assistant coach. However, he found himself thrust into the head coaching role under unexpected and challenging circumstances. Mike Babcock, the initial head coach, resigned less than a month before the regular season amid allegations of violating players' privacy, an incident that shocked the hockey community.

Despite the tumultuous start, Vincent was commended for his dedication and hard work under trying conditions. Nonetheless, given the team’s lackluster performance, it became evident that a change behind the bench was necessary for the Blue Jackets’ progression.

As Waddell noted, "As I spent time with Pascal over the past few weeks, I found him to be an outstanding person and smart hockey coach who worked very hard under trying circumstances. But I believe a change behind the bench is in our team's best interest."

Waddell expressed gratitude for Vincent's effort and professionalism during his tenure, "On behalf of our organization, I want to thank Pascal for his work ethic, professionalism, and contributions during his three seasons with the Blue Jackets."

Looking Forward

With Vincent’s departure, the Columbus Blue Jackets are now the only NHL team with a head coaching vacancy. This offseason, eight teams have already hired a new coach or promoted an interim coach to a permanent role, with the most recent addition being Ryan Warsofsky to the San Jose Sharks.

The incoming coach for the Blue Jackets will face the formidable challenge of revamping a squad that requires improvements across the board. From defensive solidity to offensive firepower, and special teams’ efficiency, every aspect demands attention and tailored strategies for enhancement.

Despite the grim season, the Blue Jackets’ faithful are holding onto cautious optimism. The franchise is poised to turn a new leaf, with hopes of restoring past glories and ushering in a period of renewed success. The recent changes in leadership reflect a proactive approach to revitalizing the team.

The Blue Jackets and their fans are eagerly looking ahead, hoping the new direction will lead to the successful turnaround they have been yearning for. With strategic moves and key appointments, there's a sense of anticipation for what's to come as the team embarks on this new chapter.
