The Philadelphia Eagles have bolstered their offensive line by signing versatile lineman Mekhi Becton. Originally brought in as a swing tackle to back up starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton is quickly proving his value through adaptability and performance.
Becton’s Immediate Impact
In a turn of events that showcased his readiness, Becton was thrust into a starting position during his first practice with the first team, lining up as the right guard due to Tyler Steen’s ankle injury. His impact was immediate and impressive, neutralizing standout defensive tackle Jalen Carter in 11-on-11 drills, signaling his readiness for competitive play.
Head coach Nick Sirianni expressed optimism, stating, "I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that.” This underscores the coaching staff's confidence in Becton’s capabilities and potential to contribute significantly.
Adaptability and Preparation
Despite not practicing during the initial days of training camp, Becton utilized his time effectively. Observing and staying engaged, he focused on learning from teammates and understanding the team’s dynamics. Becton revealed, "The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help."
Landon Dickerson, the Eagles' left guard, also praised Becton’s versatility and resilience: "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?" His ability to play multiple positions — both guard spots and tackle — is a tremendous asset. "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions," Dickerson added.
Valuable Team Member
While Tyler Steen’s return remains uncertain, Becton’s presence provides essential depth and flexibility. He remains a crucial component of the Eagles' second-team offensive line, ready to step up when required. "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," Becton remarked, showcasing his team-first mentality and readiness to contribute in any capacity.
As the season progresses, Becton's role may continue to evolve, but his preparedness and adaptability are undeniable. His initial performances and attitude have already made a positive impression on the coaching staff and his teammates. The Eagles’ offensive line appears to have gained a formidable and flexible member, prepared to take on multiple roles while maintaining high performance, highlighting the strategic significance of his acquisition.
With Becton in the mix, the Philadelphia Eagles are looking stronger and more resilient as they gear up for the challenges ahead, confident in their reinforced offensive line and the value Mekhi Becton brings to the table.
