CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers Are Staying in Charlotte for the Foreseeable Future
In a landmark decision that will keep the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte for the next 20 years, the Charlotte City Council voted Monday night to approve a joint $800 million stadium renovation plan with the team. This decision ensures that the NFL franchise remains anchored in the Queen City through 2045.
City Council Approves Stadium Renovation Plan
The council's commitment to the project involves the city contributing $650 million toward the extensive renovations required for Bank of America Stadium. Panthers owner David Tepper will supply the remaining $150 million upfront. In addition to this, Tepper, who has already invested over $117 million in previous stadium upgrades, has also agreed to potentially cover an estimated $421 million in overage costs for capital improvements.
These substantial renovations will be funded through existing hospitality and tourism tax resources, alleviating the need for new taxes or additional financial burdens on city residents. The vote reflected both support and skepticism among council members, passing by a 7-3 margin.
Securing the Panthers for the Long Term
Despite the team's struggles since Tepper's acquisition in 2018—posting a record of 31-68 and cycling through six head coaches—the council recognized the essential role the Panthers play in the local community and economy. Although the team finished with a league-worst 2-15 record last season, the decision underscores the council's commitment to prevent any possibility of the Panthers relocating.
"For nearly 30 years, Charlotte has been the home of the Carolina Panthers and, more recently, Charlotte FC. Renovating an Iconic Stadium
Bank of America Stadium, which has been the Panthers' home since 1996, is now considered one of the older stadiums in the league. While the team's management is keen to point out that the 72,000-seat stadium has "good bones," they acknowledge that major renovations are necessary to modernize the venue and keep pace with other stadiums around the league.
The proposed renovations are extensive and anticipated to be completed by 2029. Planned upgrades include enhanced video and audio systems, modernized infrastructure, redesigned concourses, unique social areas with views of the city skyline, and exterior spaces tailored for community gatherings and programming. The south lawn pavilion area will also undergo a transformation, reimagined as a community gathering spot and outdoor classroom, further integrating the stadium into Charlotte's urban fabric.

Opinions within the council were diverse, with Councilmember Tiawana Brown voicing a more cautious stance: "It sounds real good until we get Mr. Tepper angry, and then he might throw something at the city council."
